Drama Club With Three Top 10 Finishes at 2017 STANJ Competition

Last weekend, 25 Hoboken High School Drama Club members in grades 7-12 participated in the Speech and Theatre Association of New Jersey’s Governor’s Award Competition at Rutgers University. 600 students from 28 high schools across the state competed in 6 different categories. Hoboken High School students received 4 perfect scores, and placed in the top 10 in 3 of those 6 categories.

Dramatic Pair:  Brandon Lyons & Te'Janea Bradely Johnson, 5th Place

Comedic Pair:  Daniel Safanova & Anthony Sparacino, 7th Place
HHS Drama and Backstage Clubs Back in the Spotlight at NJ Thespians Competition

Over the weekend the Hoboken High School Drama and Backstage Clubs participated in the NJ Thespians Festival held at Robbinsville High School. This two-day festival brought in thirty-five high schools from across the state with approximately 1500 students competing in a variety of categories.

The Hoboken High School Theater Department put its prowess on display again, taking home 12 overall medals!

As a group, the club was awarded 3 acting awards and incredible feedback on their performance of “The Laramie Project” in the Chapter Select One -Act Play category. The judges were particularly impressed with the honesty and truthfulness the performance.

A perfect score in certain National Event categories is rewarded with competition eligibility for the International Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska.

We are very proud of the six students who took home superior medals and invitations to compete in Nebraska this June for the following categories!:

Drama Club Wins Big at STANJ Competition

On January 30th, 2016, the Hoboken Junior Senior High School Drama Club attended The NJ Secondary School Theatre Competition, and once again proved to be extremely successful. HJSHS brought home 4 awards, most notably Brandon Lyons’ Best Actor award for his portrayal of Walter Lee in A Raisin in the Sun.

The NJ Secondary School Theatre Competition is a statewide theatre festival and competition held in association with the New Jersey Governor’s Awards in Arts and Education, and sponsored by the Speech and Theatre Association of New Jersey. 600 students from 35 schools across the state were in attendance, competing in seven different categories.

Five different Hoboken Junior Senior High School students earned awards. Brittney Colon and Gina Rotondi took 3rd and 4th place, respectively, in the Comedic Monologue category. Brandon Lyons, Jeańe Cummins, and Te’Janea Bradley-Johnson teamed up to perform a scene from A Raisin in the Sun and took 4th place as a group in the Scene Competition Category. Additionally, Brandon Lyons won the Best Actor award of the entire competition for his part in A Raisin in the Sun as Walter Lee. In addition to his competition award trophy, Brandon will be further recognized at the NJ Governor’s Awards in Arts Education Ceremony in Trenton in May.
