2017 STEAM Tank Competition

2017 STEAM Tank Competition Begins
The Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) concept has taken the field of education by storm. Our elementary school Gifted and Talented students were recently granted the opportunity to dive in head first with the STEAM Tank Challenge.

The STEAM Tank Challenge, created and sponsored by the New Jersey School Boards Association and the US Army, is a competition modeled after the “Shark Tank” television show.

The competition pits student teams against each other to create innovative projects, and present their inventions before a judging panel of entrepreneurs, business leaders, and inventors.

Hoboken students in grades 3 to 6 were tasked with devising a new invention, modifying an existing invention, or identifying a problem and developing an innovative solution. Across the district, 18 teams developed some very creative concepts.

Students then had to make a virtual pitch that was viewed by a panel of Hoboken’s administrative including Superintendent Dr. Johnson and Assistant Superintendent Mr. Fitzhugh, professionals in the STEAM fields, and others. Each pitch was scored, and the top teams were nominated to advance to the Regional Competition.
In the end, it was the sixth grade team of Hudson Matullo and Sanjna Samrai and their “Disposable Storm Drain Collector” which was chosen to advance to the Regional Competition at NJIT on May 13th!
