Computer Science Education Week

Computer Science Education Week & The Hour of Code
Computer Science Education Week is an annual program dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest in computer science. To recognize and celebrate this week, all of the students in the Hoboken Public School District were immersed in The Hour of Code initiative.

The Hour of Code is a global movement that reaches tens of millions of students across the world. It began as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code,” to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science.

The district’s youngest learners at Brandt Primary School were introduced to JavaScript, participated in the games Kodable and Code Spark Academy, and followed audio-instructions to personalize their game code, while learning the foundation of text-based programming.

At Calabro Elementary School, students applied problem solving skills, logical thinking, and creativity to create their own Star Wars games using JavaScript. They also mastered the programming of droids, created their own webpages using HTML and CSS, used blocks of code to adventure through the Minecraft world, and created their own stories!

Kindergarteners at Connors and Wallace Elementary Schools began Computer Science Education Week with an exploration through the book Look Inside How Computers Work, before they tried coding on their own.

Meanwhile, the older students spent time on computers and iPads, learning about coding and careers in technology by watching videos and interviews, and playing some familiar games!

Students at Hoboken Middle School had a blast creating iPhone Apps, practicing their coding skills, and experimenting with different animation techniques.

Hoboken High School students were introduced to block programming by selecting from different advanced coding activities available through the Hour of Code initiative.

Computer science opens more doors for students than any other discipline in today’s world. Learning even the basics will help students in virtually any career. The Hoboken Public School District knows how important it is to explore today’s expanding field of technology, and is committed to providing each student with the highest level of 21st Century learning.
