HHS Harvard Model Congress Takes on San Francisco

Hoboken High School Harvard Model Congress Team Goes to HMCSF

The 2017 Harvard Model Conference in San Francisco was a milestone event for the Hoboken HMC Team. Hoboken students actively participated in one of the most prestigious and realistic government simulation programs in the country. Our students collaborated with top students from across the nation on Congressional Committees, including the House Foreign Relations Committee, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and The Senate Committee on Health, Labor, Education, and Pensions.

Harvard Model Congress San Francisco has been touted as one of the best civic engagement conferences under the Harvard Model Congress umbrella since its establishment in 2001. Students were offered the unique opportunity to assume the role of real life senators, congressmen, and members of special programs to inspire debate, cooperation and legislation - while also forcing students to expand their own perspectives and to understand the issues at hand in a new, more nuanced way.

Hoboken team members were able to show immediate impact in the process of government during special activities involving President-Elect Donald Trump’s first 100 days. Gianaly Santiago represented her committee on education reform during full session and explained to the members of Congress the committee’s ideas about President Elect Trump’s proposals concerning education.

Over the course of the conference, students authored, promoted and defended their proposed bills. Angelene Veloce, Amanda Hichez, Kobe Dawes, E’Nigel Owusu-Ansah, and Arianna Santiago authored bills that were eventually passed through the House of Representatives and the Senate. A bill authored by Arianna was one of only two bills to become law and Arianna’s bill was the only bill in the conference to override a presidential veto.

At the conference’s conclusion, there was a feeling of inspiration and pride by all participants. Hoboken was honored to receive an award of Honorable Mention, presented to Amanda Hichez for her work in the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.
