Redwings Defeat Kearny 2–1 at NJCU to Capture Historic County Title
Hoboken, NJ, —(Tuesday, May 19, 2026) The Hoboken High School boys volleyball team made school history on Friday night, capturing its first-ever Hudson County Tournament championship with a thrilling 2–1 victory over Kearny at New Jersey City University.
In front of an energetic crowd filled with students, families, alumni, and supporters, the Redwings delivered a resilient and determined performance to secure one of the most significant victories in program history.
Hoboken, now 19–4 on the season, came out strong from the opening serve, using aggressive offense, disciplined defense, and strong communication to take the first set 25–14. Kearny battled back in the second set, earning a 25–19 victory to even the match and force a decisive third set.
With the county championship on the line, the Redwings responded with composure and confidence. Hoboken quickly regained momentum in the final frame behind dominant serving runs, strong net play, and relentless defensive effort. The team closed out the match with another convincing 25–14 victory, securing the first county title in school history.
Senior Jack Jennings led the offensive attack with 12 kills while also contributing nine digs in an exceptional all-around performance. Gabriel Brody continued his standout season with 11 kills, 13 digs, and two blocks, helping anchor both the offense and defense throughout the night.
Setter Denilson Carino directed the Redwings offense with 31 assists while also recording eight digs and two aces. His leadership and consistency helped keep Hoboken’s attack balanced and efficient throughout the championship match.
Levi Marsh added four kills, two blocks, and eight digs, while Oliver Nunez provided a strong defensive presence with 11 digs. Ariel Cuadra led the team in service points with nine, consistently putting pressure on Kearny’s defense. Christopher Munoz contributed six kills and a block in a key performance during the championship victory.
The historic championship is the culmination of months of hard work, preparation, and dedication by the players and coaching staff. Throughout the season, the Redwings demonstrated tremendous growth, teamwork, and resilience while establishing themselves as one of the premier volleyball programs in Hudson County.
Jack Baker, Hoboken HS Athletic Director praised the team’s determination and commitment throughout the season.
“This championship reflects the commitment, discipline, and heart of this team,” said Baker. “Our student-athletes have worked incredibly hard all season long, and this historic accomplishment is something the entire Hoboken community can celebrate with pride.”
Felipe Fernandes, Hoboken HS Volleyball Head Coach, reflected on the team’s journey throughout the season and the confidence the group has developed entering postseason play.
“It’s been a season of a lot of ups and its fair share of downs, but what I am most proud of about this team is its willingness to stay together and learn how to overcome adversity as a team,” said Fernandes. “We head into the state tournament playing our best volleyball and with a newly gained sense of confidence following the County Championship match. This team believes they can compete with anyone, and that is always a good sign heading into States.”
The victory marks another major milestone for Hoboken Public School District athletics and adds another championship banner to the school’s growing tradition of excellence in competition, leadership, and student achievement. The Redwings’ success has energized the school community throughout the postseason, with students, staff, families, and alumni rallying behind the team during its historic tournament run.
Beyond the championship victory, the season has showcased the dedication, sportsmanship, and perseverance of the student-athletes, whose commitment to one another has helped define the culture of the program.
