Hoboken Middle School Excels in the National Geography Challenge

 

Hoboken, NJ — July 10, 2024 - Hoboken Middle School is proud to announce that its Eighth Grade Team secured 2nd place and its Sixth Grade Team achieved 3rd place in the National Geography Challenge. Additionally, Jonathan Offer, a rising 9th grade student from Hoboken Middle School, earned 2nd place overall nationally in the individual scores category.

The National Geography Challenge is an esteemed academic competition designed to ignite and assess the geographical knowledge of students across various grade levels. This annual event aims to deepen students' understanding and appreciation of geography, engaging them with physical and human geography topics on local, national, and global scales.

Hoboken Middle School’s Academic Team competed at the 6th grade level and at the 7th and The competition structure includes school, regional and national level competitions. Hoboken Middle School’s Academic Team participated in the 5th & 6th Grade Competition and in the 7th through 9th Grade Competition, each requiring a series of questions centered around the Five Themes of Geography to be answered within 35 minutes. 

Hoboken Middle School is committed to social studies and geography education. Principal Ryan Sorafine shared, “The knowledge of geography is critically important for middle school students as it fosters global awareness, cultural understanding, and environmental stewardship. It promotes critical thinking by encouraging analysis of human-environmental interactions and spatial relationships. It offers our students historical context, economic understanding, and problem-solving abilities for real-world issues. Most important, geography's interdisciplinary nature helps our students become informed, empathetic global citizens.”
