Advancing Equity and Academic Excellence Through Determination, Opportunity, and College Readiness
Hoboken, NJ, — July 7, 2026 The Hoboken Public School District proudly announces the introduction of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) into its high school program of studies. This initiative represents a significant advancement in expanding college readiness opportunities for students across the district. AVID is a nationally recognized system with more than 40 years of documented success in closing opportunity gaps and elevating academic achievement for diverse and underrepresented student groups.
AVID’s mission is centered on equity and access. The program is designed to close the opportunity gap and ensure that students in the academic middle—those with strong potential but limited access to advanced academic pathways—receive the support, structure, and encouragement needed to thrive. AVID identifies students who demonstrate determination, resilience, and promise and provides them with a comprehensive support system that helps them rise to rigorous expectations.
Beginning in the fall of 2026, AVID will debut with a group of 25 incoming ninth-grade students at Hoboken High School. Each subsequent year, an additional cohort will be added as rising eighth graders from Hoboken Middle School participate in an application process for acceptance into the program. This structured approach ensures that AVID continues to identify students who show both promise and readiness for the rigor and commitment the program requires.
A defining feature of AVID is its intentional focus on students who show both promise and perseverance. AVID students consistently demonstrate drive, discipline, and resilience, reflecting a strong commitment to personal growth while maintaining average-range grade point averages and test scores. These indicators reveal untapped potential that can be strengthened through structured academic support. AVID students also exhibit a clear desire to work hard, maintain solid attendance, and earn strong teacher recommendations that affirm their readiness to engage in a rigorous college-preparatory experience.
AVID strengthens student learning through a collection of proven instructional strategies that promote inquiry, collaboration, and organization. Students engage in structured tutorials that encourage them to ask meaningful questions and explore solutions with the support of trained tutors. They learn focused note-taking strategies that deepen comprehension and reinforce retention across all subject areas. AVID classrooms emphasize collaborative learning, allowing students to work together to analyze complex texts, solve challenging problems, and build communication skills. In addition, students develop strong organizational habits through the use of binders, planners, and goal-setting routines that help them manage their academic responsibilities with confidence and consistency. These strategies work together to create a learning environment that builds independence, strengthens critical thinking, and prepares students for the demands of college-level coursework.
Through a demanding college-preparatory curriculum, AVID equips students with inquiry-based instruction, organizational tools, critical-thinking strategies, and meaningful engagement in extracurricular and leadership opportunities.
