Rutgers Pre-Medical Honors

For our students that exhibit an interest in becoming a physician, dentist, medical scientist, or otherwise is interested in entering one of the healthcare fields? This is an opportunity for high school students to experience a medical school education presented in a lay language, provided by members of the faculty of the New Jersey Medical School who have designed a nine-week sequence of formal lectures, seminars, small group discussions, as well as several elective courses.

Sessions take place Wednesday evenings at 5:30 p.m., with facilitated group discussions led by New Jersey Medical School students where lecture topics will be reviewed and discussed.. Formal lectures given by the New Jersey Medical School faculty will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m, with the evening ending at approximately 8:45 p.m.

Students are also encouraged to enroll in elective courses involving basic life support given on selected weekends. This is an opportunity to become certified in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) upon successful completion of the four hour course. Students may also enroll in a 2 hour medical librarianship course as well. Finally, a didactic lecture on Cardio-Pulmonary Physiology and a live EKG demonstration are offered in order to complement the principles discussed in the Basic Life Support course. Tours of the Emergency Room, Pathology Laboratories, and University Hospital nursing units are also offered.

A medical student will be assigned to each student to help ensure that the experience is rewarding and exciting.
