Hoboken Public School District receives grant from YWCA Northern NJ for Staff Training

Hoboken Public School District educators will receive training on Raising Race Conscious Children (RRCC)

Hoboken, NJ, Thursday, February 3, 2022-The Hoboken Public School District received a $10,000 grant from YWCA Northern NJ to train teaching and other certificated staff on the Raising Race Conscious Children (RRCC) Program.

The RRCC Program is a resource to support adults who are trying to talk about race with young children. The goals of these conversations are to dismantle the color-blind framework and prepare young people to work toward racial justice. By collectively trying to talk about race with young children, we can lean on one another for support as we, together, envision a world where we actively challenge racism each and every day.

Hoboken Public School Educators will be trained on the following:

Develop confidence to talk about race with students. Practice strategies to proactively and responsively talk about race with students. Explore ways to integrate race-conscious practices into the classroom and school culture. Practice planning lessons with a race-conscious lens.

So far, 30 teachers and administrators have engaged in the first course entitled, “Unconscious Bias.”

The second and third courses are currently being scheduled by administrators in each building throughout the district.

Background:

About YWCA Northern NJ: YWCA is the oldest and largest multicultural women’s organization in the world. For over a century, YWCA Northern New Jersey has been on the forefront of the fight against gender and racial discrimination. We work to build more just and inclusive communities through programs for women and girls, anti-racism training, and policy advocacy.

YWCA has been at the forefront of the most pressing social movements for more than 150 years — from voting rights to civil rights, from affordable housing to pay equity, from violence prevention to health care reform. Today, we combine programming and advocacy in order to generate institutional change in three key areas: racial justice and civil rights, empowerment and economic advancement of women and girls, and health and safety of women and girls.
