START STRONG
As you may recall, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New Jersey Department of Education cancelled the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) in the Spring of 2021. Instead, and only for fall of 2021, students will take an assessment called Start Strong. The Start Strong Assessment is intended to:
- Provide an early indication of the level of support students may need based upon the prior year’s academic standards.
- Be administered quickly and provide immediate results.
- Serve as New Jersey’s federally required general assessments for the 2020-2021 school year in English language arts (ELA)/mathematics/science, including public reporting of school-level results disaggregated by subgroup.
The NJ Department of Education expects schools to administer the Start Strong assessments in fall 2021 to all students in:
- ELA grades 4-10
- Mathematics grades 4-8
- Algebra I
- Geometry
- Algebra II
- Science grades 6, 9, and 12
