School resource officers (SROs) are sworn law enforcement officers who are responsible for providing security and crime prevention services in the American school environment.
The school resource officer's role includes but is not limited to:
- To prevent juvenile delinquency through close contact with students and school personnel
- To establish liaison with school principals, faculty, security personnel and students.
- To act as a liaison resource to the school administrators in investigating criminal law violations occurring in the school or on school property.
- To provide liaison between students and social agencies that provide needed services.
- To inform the students of their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
- To formulate educational crime prevention programs to reduce the opportunity for crimes against persons and property in the schools
